A friend in film making.

Three years ago a very famous man was dragged along to my house by a good friend. He came to give me advice on how to get my first novel published. He saw my gorgeous dog, Bear outside and asked if he was friendly. As soon as I said 'yes' he opened the door to say hello.
Bear is a large Rottweiler - it's a good thing I wasn't lying about him being friendly!
After Bear peed on his shoes, this quiet and unassuming man invited me to a local and very dilapidated house where he was going to be shooting his movie The Stone - No Soul Unturned. Philip Gardiner is the Director, the quiet and unassuming man I mentioned earlier and if you Google him, there's not much he hasn't done in the world of cults, religions, secret societies and all things weird and wonderful.
After a whole week of watching, listening and learning without realising, I took away from the experience a wealth of information on how things work in the film industry - the Indie Film Industry, not Hollywood.
I thought that would have been it for my film career but I was pleasantly surprised to learn that for my efforts on set (tea making mostly), I was going to get a credit on there! Well that was worth it! Then Phil asked if I'd like to come and watch another film in the making - Paranormal Haunting - The Curse of the Blue Moon Inn. Of course I said yes!
After filming that one, things went a little quiet. I started helping out on AWESOME Magazine, writing at the end of 2011 but not much else, I continued with my political work and tried to get as much writing in as I could.
At the beginning of 2012 my life was turned upside down.
Phil asked why I hadn't asked him to work on my book covers. I told him that I didn't want to be someone who asks him to do stuff for the sake of it. I just didn't "want to be that person" who takes advantage of a friendship. I'm NOT that kind of person.
Then on 1st May I took a phone call from my husband's workplace. He'd been taken to hospital. He'd been underground (he's an Electrical Engineer at a coal mine) and he took ill. I later found out that he had been alone when he took ill and had to struggle along, getting weaker and weaker for about a kilometer. He had had a heart attack - he could have died in the time it took him to get to somewhere where there were people to help him. He was stretchered out of the mine and taken to hospital. I couldn't go to see him straight away, they would be doing tests. I was at my wits' end, almost frantic with worry.
Coincidentally (and believe me, I don't believe in coincidence) Phil phoned and it all came out.
"You know I said I don't want to be that person who asks you for help?" I said.
"Yes,"
"Well, I'm going to have to be that person. Trev's had a heart attack," I said and even as I was saying it, the implications still hadn't got through, the truth hadn't hit me yet.
"Leave it with me," Phil said.
Over the next few days, while Trev was in hospital and I was worrying myself stupid, there were friends messaging me and offering support. Dave and Jules especially spring to mind, Jules offered to send Dave on his days off to stay with me for moral support. You know you are truly blessed when long-distance friends loan their husbands - I'll never forget that act of kindness Jules. One friend in particular was never 'out of touch'. It didn't matter what time of day or night, if I needed to talk about something - in particular what we were going to do if Trev could no longer work - Phil took my call. He's a very busy bloke and yet he had time to listen to a friend. I'll never forget that either.
Not only did he listen, he actually heard. He didn't offer to pay my mortgage, he didn't offer me a job but he did offer me something I desperately needed - a focus to get my mind off the worry about my husband. I have a saying, "If you can't change something by worrying about it, don't worry about it" but it's so much easier to give advice than take it.
Phil asked me if I'd like to be Producer on his new movie Exorcist Chronicles. Now, of course I said yes. It did the trick too. I was too busy to worry unnecessarily - Trev was on the mend, no damage to his heart, no surgery needed and in fact, the doctors said he was in possession of healthier arteries than his own (bearing in mind the doctor was very young) and there really was nothing to worry about.
What I've come to understand about this friend of mine, Philip Gardiner, is that he may give a direct helping hand to people he considers friends but he has another way too. He will push you towards opportunities. He doesn't tell you what to do, he'll show you options and watch how you deal with the choices. Sometimes things don't happen immediately but patience is a virtue - it really is.
I've watched for a few years now, I've listened to him and I've seen how some people can't wait for the exact time to make a move. Those people get impatient that Phil hasn't made it all happen yet but what they don't get is that Phil isn't the one that needs to be making it all happen, THEY are.
I dare say a word dropped in the right ear would catapult someone into the heady heights of fame and fortune and everything that goes with it - exploitation, back-stabbing and as swift a fall from glory as the rise to fame was - perhaps more so. But, do it for yourself, do the groundwork, build the foundations and fame will come - steadily, slowly perhaps but it will be YOURS and you'll be able to own it and sustain it for many years - I know which I'd prefer.

The picture I chose for this post is one of my favourites. I think I look strong and confident in it but believe me, things could have gone a very different way on that day in May 2012. I thank the mineworkers, ambulance staff, doctors and nurses who helped my beloved husband that day and I also thank Dave and Jules. My undying gratitude also goes to Phil Gardiner who had nothing to gain, nothing to 'pay back' and certainly no need to give support and distraction to me. Yet he did, he never said there would be monetary benefit, he never promised to enhance my career but the advice he gave and advice I've seen him give to others - taken or ignored - is invaluable.

Learn from others' mistakes, life is too short to make them all yourself.

My writing career and where I hope to go with it

This is me, the picture is quite a recent one, like it or loathe it, I can't change it and now, at this stage in my life, I wouldn't want to.

My writing on the other hand is always subject to change. For example, a year or so ago, I decided to have a go at a new direction - YA - Young Adult writing and Dusty was 'born' - later Celtica came into being and she's being worked on.

The purpose of this blog post I suppose is to gain interest in my writing in the hope that other bloggers will take a chance on my books, read, review and blog about them - purely selfish I suppose but my dream of becoming a writer who can support herself and her family is close... almost close enough to reach out and grab. I just need a little help.

So, from the heart, here are my wares, my stories, my characters and my soul. These are my creations and they are all very precious to me.

If you're interested in blogging about my stories, please feel free to contact me or my publisher Gingernut Books - [email protected]
If you have give-aways on your blog, I can help out with that too - again, feel free to contact the above address.

Through semi-clenched jaws Hazel growled “Unless you give me your word that you will never touch me or command me again, then Lycaeon heir or no, I will end your life here and now and be damned to the consequences.”
“Hazel, let him go.” Anton said with calmness that he did not feel.
“No Anton, I will not and if you move to stop me he will be dead before you are Wolf, you know this.”
“Yes Hazel, I do know. I give my word, I will not intervene.”
“Grandfather…” Phillipe choked.
“Phillipe, you have a choice, I do not think you have two choices for there is, in reality only one you can make if you are to survive. You must give your oath and mean it. I suggest you do it now!”
“Hazel! I promise I will give due respect to you from now. I will never touch you or command you to do anything again, but please, you are killing me.”

This was an interesting book, not only for the cures but also for the hand-written script that was as uniform and constant as though it had been printed mechanically - yet that was clearly not the case. The book had been painstakingly written in a perfect, legible hand - it must have taken years.
Jack was quite tempted to purchase the book, if only for the novelty value. Then he happened upon a page that captured his attention and had him enthralled.
The cure for a Weerwolf is difficult and filled with danger. Preparation and aforethought is essential. Silver is widely thought to be the only metal which can harm or kill such a beast but to cure it, there are many methods.

A Rabbit, a Bouncer, a Barman, a Turn-coat, and a Lackey on one side.

A Vixen, a handful of Ancient rebels and a Queen on the other.

Caught between a prophecy and the unpredictable turns of events caused by the Supermoon, Red is faced by her Nemesis – or is she the Nemesis of the one returned from the dead?

Manipulating a prophecy that is more than a thousand years old, one Ancient traitor is dabbling in dangerous practices and as ever, the victims will be of little concern to him.

A six story series at the moment, I'm working on the 7th and 8th in the series with the 9th and 10th rattling around inside my head.

Dusty is a half demon teenager and if you thought your teenage years were difficult, try adding to the mix that her father murdered her mother on her birthday.

Dusty's grandparents have had to not only take her under their wing but have also had to learn all about her father's heritage that she is burdened with. Keeping Dusty safe not only from the usual growing up dangers but also the deadly supernatural ones is a task she wouldn't wish to put upon her grandparents but they have taken it all in their stride.

The occupant of the penthouse suite, (the one with the full-on security shutters, remember) strolled down the stairs in a long, elegant black gown. She wore her dark brunette hair loose and it cascaded down her back in what seemed like jewelled, silken hanks with flashes of mahogany and red sifted in. Her hair had a deep and healthy shine that drew admiring glances from men and women alike and she had been approached by more than one hair care product manufacturer to pose as their hair girl. She had, of course, declined every offer.

She was athletic and when wearing clothes that were cut to cling to her curves, her musculature could clearly be seen if an observer could tear his gaze from her mesmerising dark eyes. Of all her physical qualities, her eyes were the feature that held attention and kept drawing the admirer back. Some described her eyes as hypnotic, spellbinding, compelling and she always played on her best features. Her eye make-up was dark and dramatic; she was playing them up this evening.

Red spotted the woman she had come to meet before the other had chance to see her. Red knew she was the one she was looking for even though the distinctive and unmistakable scar was hidden. She knew it was her by a number of things that set her apart from the others in the room. The woman’s bearing was the main factor, she was high-born and wore the fact with pride – although to most people in the room, it would seem as though she was arrogant and so she sat alone.
It was convenient that she had chosen the corner booth to sit in; she could see the main entrance and therefore, everyone that came through the door so that she wouldn’t be surprised. What the woman didn’t know about Red was that she knew most of the door staff in all of the clubs in the town centre and she didn’t have to use the main entrance.
Red decided to drop her cloaking for a brief moment to test the woman and she smiled as the woman froze in her movement to pick up her glass.
Red was within a few paces of the booth before the woman turned her head enough to allow Red to see the disturbing scar.

Editing, writing, publishing and everything that goes with it

Well perhaps not everything that goes with it.
I've just found a blog called Working with an Editor - it's quite a good and informative post - I liked it so I decided to look up 'reblogging' and have a go at that.
I read it and as it usually does, my mind went off at a tangent and started on its own path of thought. Here's where it took me:

Publishers - the 'Big Six' I suppose, are wanting writers to do more and more with their manuscripts before they send them in to be rejected - ooops, sorry, I mean dropped into the marshland called 'Land of Slushpile'. Publishers want polished covering/query letters, sublime story lines, well rounded and established characters and now they want the writer to hire an editor before sending the manuscript in. OK, that's fine I suppose, it makes the process that much more efficient and faster. It gets the books onto the shelves quicker, with less fuss... what do you mean no, not necessarily?

So, editing, which was once something that happened after you got your story accepted by a publisher, now has to be done before it goes to the publisher? Why is that I wonder?
The cynic in me would say that perhaps the publishers are having such a hard time lately - what with it being easier than ever for self-publishers, Indie and small press to chip, chip, chip away at their profits (here's a little info on that) they now need to cut costs here, there and everywhere in order to earn a crust? Bearing in mind, of course, that at BEST, EL James will have earned 20% on her sales to get that $95 MILLION - leaving an estimated $400 MILLION just for that series - yes, that's right - JUST for that series. If her cut was 10%, it would mean an estimated $850 MILLION went elsewhere.

Perhaps... times are tough for everyone, especially the smaller fish in the pond.

Perhaps it's yet another way of clawing revenue in without putting investment out. Did E L James' books get run over by an editor before they went to press? From a lot of the reviews, it would seem that they went nowhere near an editor but that's by-the-by.

No, what it looks like to me, (still the cynic, I can't help it) is that less investment put in means more chance of a profit on the other end. Not only does the Publishing house still get the full whack of royalties, they also get to cut loose their editing staff - no wages for them now - plus the fact that a writer is expected to market their own work far more than ever they had to in the past, 'glory days' and then, here's another kicker - any advance paid can also be clawed back if the book isn't the massive best seller the writer hopes and prays for. If the book doesn't pay for itself in as little as two weeks (yes, really!) then the Publisher can ask for their advance payment back and refuse to print any more if there was a deal on a series.

Is there NO risk in this business for the Publisher any more? It would seem perhaps not - it would seem that there are scammers on both sides of the self-publishing fence.

Deadlier than the Male follows me around...

The press clipping is from The Times Women's supplement. It shows me! Yes, that's me a long time ago. I had been invited to Maidenhead to  my friend's house to stay over for a night while we travelled into London for the charity evening at The Playing Fields.
Buffy (our Clan Leader in Quake II), 'Tigereye' and me - Batgirl, went and had a lovely evening, fragging and creating havoc. We were interviewed, we had a good few games (I won a limited edition Quake III metal box set). My configs were wiped by the guy who owned the place (ooops, he wasn't expecting us girlies to be so well prepared) and I had to go into a game with a rudimentary set of weapons to my machine for the game. Still, by the end of the match, I was ahead by such a huge lead that my opponents - the owner and a champion Quake II player from Ireland - had to join together to attack me. I still won!

I admit that when I came to think up a title for my novel later, I must have had the article in my mind and Deadlier than the Male stuck.

I also remember a few other coincidences (who believes in coincidences anyway?) Space had a hit with 'Female of the Species the same year I began writing Deadlier and I have a number of other books in my collection with the same title - they are usually about female serial killers I believe.
