The press clipping is from The Times Women's supplement. It shows me! Yes, that's me a long time ago. I had been invited to Maidenhead to my friend's house to stay over for a night while we travelled into London for the charity evening at The Playing Fields.
Buffy (our Clan Leader in Quake II), 'Tigereye' and me - Batgirl, went and had a lovely evening, fragging and creating havoc. We were interviewed, we had a good few games (I won a limited edition Quake III metal box set). My configs were wiped by the guy who owned the place (ooops, he wasn't expecting us girlies to be so well prepared) and I had to go into a game with a rudimentary set of weapons to my machine for the game. Still, by the end of the match, I was ahead by such a huge lead that my opponents - the owner and a champion Quake II player from Ireland - had to join together to attack me. I still won!
I admit that when I came to think up a title for my novel later, I must have had the article in my mind and Deadlier than the Male stuck.
I also remember a few other coincidences (who believes in coincidences anyway?) Space had a hit with 'Female of the Species the same year I began writing Deadlier and I have a number of other books in my collection with the same title - they are usually about female serial killers I believe.
