The HIGHS and Lows of film making

Since last year when I started making films with a more hands on outlook - actually being involved and working rather than just going along for the ride like I had before - I've come to realise that it may be hard work from start to the finish but oh BOY! Is it worth it!

Last year we started a new and extremely ambitious project called Dead Walkers - here and here - and from the start we were thrown a number of challenges.

Location was the number one issue - we couldn't even begin if we didn't have a location!
The location is a deserted trio of buildings - no electricity, no water - no creature comforts at all! Bear that in mind when you realise that we started filming in December - the cold was biting and there was no respite inside the buildings. The only comfort we had from the buildings was shelter from the wind but it's an AWESOME location!

Then we were faced with the problem of needing bodies - lots of bodies (dead and alive, as you'll see in the movie). That problem was solved by our massive network of wonderful contacts - contacts who turned up, brought others and rapidly turned into good friends in swift order! We as a team are blown away by the AWESOME willingness of each and every person who turned up! They came, they shivered and they performed! Then they went home...

Will they be back? Yeah, I bet at least some will come back... I hope!

Oh yes, they came back! They came back prepared and as eager and willing to carry on and do more of the crazy stuff asked of them!
They came back, they brought blankets, flasks, food and blood! Yes, we even had some extra fake blood brought along (good job too! We'd have been short of a few pints if not!)

In short, the cast of Dead Walkers have thrown themselves into the fray with an enthusiasm and vigour that astonishes and astounds me. I am pleased to work with you all, you're bloody marvelous!

Oh yeah... the lows... there aren't any!

The filming of Dead Walkers, was an eye opener, yes it was cold, yes there was no water, and again yes there was no electric, but we had the warmth of the friendship of everyone on set, people brought water to share, and there was enough electricity in everyone's enthusiasm to power a whole city and if not then the generators would pick up the slack.

The cast all did their part because we wanted to, if Phil or Michelle had asked us to run around naked then thats what would have happened, but boy would that have been a different film, but dispite that some did get to run around naked you know who you are...

The Film will be a smash so look out for it and keep reading AWESOME ONLINE MAGAZINE and maybe you too can be in one of upcoming issues.

It often appals me that people wish to put out a half-ass effort and still expect to succeed. I'm sure you've witnessed this before where someone puts in a pretend good faith effort, going through the required actions, but never putting any passion behind it - then they demand their due and payment for merely showing up and going through the motions. But really that's not good enough because it takes dedication, commitment, and determination to succeed. No one is guaranteed success, nor should it be granted for merely showing up and participating.

Come on let's talk..

The above is a comment, it is not a reflection on crew, the actors and actresses involved with Dead Walkers, it's not about making mistakes, god, I've made a few in my time, one recently, but I will put that right because I cannot rest until it is right.

I said to Michelle on day one when I turned up for a look see. "That I have never seen such enthusiasm and dedication as I had witnessed that day"

Every One has given blood on this film, some fake, much of it real. No sweat it was toooooo cold. You should all be very very proud of what has been archived...

Amongst the cast and crew, we've all heard over and over how Awesome everyone had been. A lot of it may seemed like it was just hype to other people, but had you been on set, you would have seen that it wasn't. It's one of those 'you had to be there' situations.

The people involved had been so willing and enthusiastic about it all. You can tell that's just a natural part of them but I dare say that it wouldn't have shown so quickly were it not for director, Phil Gardiner's open policy. He made himself open to other's thoughts and ideas, giving both cast and crew the opportunity to explore their own creativity. You could see him considering each of everyone's ideas, thinking how they would work or how he could make them work better. Some ideas he took, some he didn't, but never once did I see him blankly down an idea down.

Once Dead Walkers is released I should think that not only will the film play well throughout but there’ll be that extra special something about it that you can’t quite put your finger on – That extra special something being how everyone was a Team in the real sense of the word.
